Canada Soccer Names Roster for Upcoming Qualifiers Versus Mexico

Canada Soccer head coach Benito Floro has named his 23 players that will take on Mexico in upcoming World Cup Qualifiers.

On Friday, Canada Soccer announced their 23-man squad that will take on Mexico on March 25 in Vancouver and March 29 at the Estadio Azteca.

Head coach Benito Floro has decided to use experience again in Qualifers, as points are now even more crucial. Canada has four points from two matches against Honduras and El Salvador. Any point from Mexico will be great for the Canadians, as they hope to qualfiy for the next stage in the road to Russia 2018.

Of the 23 players, Toronto FC only has Will Johnson set to make an impact for Canada. Players like Jonathan Osorio and Ashtone Morgan were again left of the list. Both players have failed to make the Canadian roster since last summers Gold Cup.

Even though Osorio has been playing exceptionally well, some think Floro made the right call to let Osorio sit out these next two matches.

It will also be a memorable night for Canadian soccer fans, as former TFC midfielder and current Ottawa Fury player Julian de Guzman has set the record for most caps by a senior team player when he appeared in the February 5 friendly against the U.S. Right now, de Guzman has 85 apparences to his name, and that could reach over 90, depending on how he feels going forward.

Notable players that aren’t included are Issey Nakajima-FarranKyle BekkerSam Adekugbe, and Maxime Crepeau.

Even though some may be focused on who didn’t make the cut, some are very excited to see former Scotland youth player Scott Arfield make his Canadian national team debut.

Arfield has made appearnces for Scotland’s U-19, U-21 and B teams, but never capped by the senior squad. The 27-year-old Scottish born Arfield can play for Canada due to his father being born in Toronto. He currently plays for Burnley in the English Championship, playing a more central midfield role. He won’t get you many goals, but he is a talented midfielder who will add that much needed depth for Canada when they take on an experienced and talented Mexican squad.
