Staff Predictions: Orlando City SC vs. Toronto FC

We predict how the Orlando City SC vs. Toronto FC game will play out.

Toronto FC ended their MLS campaign before the international break with an embarrassing 3-0 loss to a resurgent New York Red Bulls team. But they have since rebounded from that by knocking out Montreal Impact over two legs without Sebastian Giovinco, then recording two straight 1-0 wins over the LA Galaxy and Vancouver Whitecaps.

All told, they haven’t allowed a goal in over 270 minutes, and will face an Orlando City side that has gotten off to a 3-8-3 start and is missing Kaka.

On paper, this looks like a tremendous mismatch, especially considering Toronto outscored Orlando 11-1 in three games last year. However, football isn’t played on paper, and this, if anything, has the makings of a trap game.

Toronto are on a cruel stretch in which they won’t get a week in between games until July, and they have a massive game ahead of them in the Canadian Championship Final against Vancouver. With that game on the back of their minds, Greg Vanney might field a reserve lineup in the hopes of preventing any major injuries or fatigue. I also think that he will play to a draw since it’s a road game. It would be a surprise if it happened, but I have a final score of 1-1.

With that in mind, let’s see how the other staff members predicted the outcome of this game:

Matt: 2-0 Toronto, I think our defence is strong enough to withstand the Orlando attack, but we will need to be calm and collected at the back as we have been the past few weeks. Also our offense should hopefully get going tonight because it’s been lacklustre these past few games from the secondary scoring front (basically the forwards that aren’t named Sebastian Giovinco).

Another three points are necessary to cement our status as one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference. Seba and Will Johnson with the goals.

Markus: 4-1 Toronto. This may sound a bit far-fetched, but Toronto beat Orlando 11-1 on aggregate last season. Orlando is very bad when they play Toronto FC, and the fact they are in a bit of a rut will not help their cause. Seba will bag a brace; Jordan Hamilton and Johnson will net the other two. Break Shea with the only for Orlando.

So there you have it. Two commanding TFC wins plus one draw. Here’s hoping I’m the one wearing an egg on my face tonight. Come on you Reds!
