In a move to shake up the roster and capitalize on General Allocation Money (GAM), Toronto FC has traded homegrown midfielder Kosi Thompson to the Colorado Rapids. The deal, reported on Wednesday by Tom Bogert, sends the 23-year-old to the Western Conference in exchange for an initial $200,000 in GAM with an additional $200,000 tied to performance-based incentives, bringing the total potential value to $400,000.

Thompson, a product of the TFC Academy, has been a fixture in the first-team setup since making his senior debut in March 2022. Over the course of five seasons, the Toronto native appeared in 97 league matches and 113 across all competitions, netting two goals in MLS play.
Despite his consistent availability and high work rate, Thompson’s tenure in Toronto was often defined by his role as a utility man rather than a specialist. Originally a natural midfielder, he was frequently moved across the pitch to fill tactical gaps. Thompson shifted toward a defensive role, often appearing as a right-back or wing-back. Additionally, he saw time in central midfield and even filled in at center-back during various injury crises. While this versatility made him a valuable asset for several TFC managers, it also hindered his ability to cement a starting spot in a single, consistent position.
At the time of the trade, Thompson was entering the final year of his contract. According to the most recent salary data, he was earning approximately $125,000, making him a relatively cost-effective domestic option for a Colorado side looking to bolster its defensive and midfield depth. Colorado is looking for more depth after the recent ankle injury to right gack Reggie Cannon, who might not be able to return before the World Cup break.
The move to the Rapids represents a fresh start for Thompson. While Toronto gains significant roster flexibility through the $400,000 in GAM, Colorado acquires a durable, 23-year-old Canadian with over 100 professional appearances who is still searching for his definitive identity on the pitch. Coincidentally, the Rapids are scheduled to visit BMO Field on April 4, meaning Thompson could face his former club just days after his departure.
