We predict how Toronto FC’s match with the LA Galaxy will play out.
Toronto FC will resume its MLS campaign by hosting the LA Galaxy in what is being billed as a heavyweight clash. Both teams came into the season as presumptive favorites to get to the MLS Cup Final. So far, they’ve both had their ups and downs, and both come into this game on a four-game winless streak.
The Galaxy have been the highest scoring team in the MLS by a country mile, but they will be missing two of their most potent strikers in Robbie Keane and Gyasi Zardes. However, they do have Giovani dos Santos who remains a threat to Toronto FC’s backline.
The best way to counteract dos Santos is to have Sebastian Giovinco cancel him out, and while he has lost playing time due to injury, he’s had 10 days to recover and should be ready to go.
More from Toronto Reds
Chalk it up to blind faith if you want, but I’m feeling good about Toronto’s chances. While they haven’t done well lately in the MLS, neither have the Galaxy, and this seems like the best time to be facing them. Beating Montreal to get to the Canadian Championship Final had to be a big morale booster for Toronto, and while LA’s attack is very potent, Toronto’s defense is one of the best in the league. The Galaxy have come up against two very solid defensive opponents in Colorado and Sporting Kansas City and got shut out both times.
Even on the offensive side, they can hang with the Galaxy today. The best match up to look out for will be between Giovinco vs. dos Santos, and I think our Atomic Ant has the upper hand there. Plus, while our biggest concern this season has been a lack of support for Giovinco, dos Santos won’t be getting the same help that he’s had throughout the season in this match.
Finally, I believe that with the home fans behind them, they will push them through to a 2-1 victory. We’re seeing already at the Copa America what a difference home advantage can make, and the Red Patch Boys and Inebriatti are among the best fans you could ask for in the MLS.
As it turns out, I’m not alone in thinking Toronto will get the job done against the Galaxy. Let’s see how the rest of our staff weighed in on this match:
Matt: I’m going to say 2-1 TFC… We’re going up against what I believe to be the best team (on paper) in the entire league. With some of the galaxy stars off playing for their respective countries, we should have an easier time dealing with them today, rather than any other day. Hopefully things can start going our way beginning today, especially when we play at home. Gio will score, and I think Oso may chip in the other goal, and dos Santos will get a goal for the visitors.
Markus: 2-0 TFC. La Galaxy are in a bit of a rut, which will not be aided by the absence of key international stars and playing away from home, while Toronto are on a high after beating Montreal over 2 legs. Expect Giovinco and Jordan Hamilton to get the start up top, Will Johnson and Benoit Cheyrou in the Midfield, and do no be surprised if we see some surprise changes in the back 4.
So there you have it, a trifecta of win predictions for Toronto. Whatever happens, it should promise to be the most entertaining MLS fixture on the schedule today, and if the Reds win, it would be a real morale booster for the rest of the season.
