As what has been a common theme over the last couple of seasons for Toronto FC, they are never fully healthy.
Ahead of the match against NYCFC on Saturday, via the Player Availability Report, Toronto FC will potentially have two players back to help the Reds secure all three points at BMO Field.
Ola Brynhildsen and Nicksoen Gomis made available for selection
Robin Fraser revealed yesterday that both Ola Brynhildsen and Nicksoen Gomis are in contention for the fixture against New York, while Deandre Kerr, Richie Laryea, Zane Monlouis and Henry Wingo remain out.
Brynhildsen missed out on Toronto's April 12th match against Minnesota United FC at home with a leg injury before returning against Real Salt Lake in Utah, picking up 18 minutes off the bench. This week, the Norweigan forward was briefly listed on the MLS site as "questionable" for Toronto but has since been removed from the report which lines up with Fraser's update.
Yet to get off the mark in Major League Soccer, Brynhildsen has started just twice for Toronto, which included being subbed off at halftime against Cincinnati after suffering an injury that would keep him out for two matches.
Meanwhile, defender Nicksoen Gomis returns to the squad after missing the past two matches with a lower-body injury sustained in the 1-1 draw against Inter Miami on April 6th. In his absence, Kevin Long has been lining up beside Sigurd Rosted in the backline, and it may take a poor defensive game from Toronto, which has been a while, to see Gomis inserted back into the starting eleven.
Derrick Etienne Jr listed as "out" versus NYCFC
A bit of a surprise to the unavailable list for Toronto is Derrick Etienne Jr., who was added to the list late this week. While it is speculative to say the injury happened in training, Etienne Jr did not leave the field in Utah with any apparent injury, subbing off at the 72-minute mark. He was also not mentioned by Fraser in his injury update response either.
The 28-year-old started the last two matches for Toronto FC but will now be sidelined for an undetermined amount of time.
Toronto FC's fixture against NYCFC will kick off at 2:30 pm ET on Saturday at BMO Field, in what is the club's fourth home match of the young season. Toronto currently holds a record of 0W-2D-1L at BMO this season. The action can be found on Apple TV and TSN.
