It’s almost four months since the Montreal Impact defeated Toronto FC in the first round of the playoffs. Now the Reds can get some revenge on their rivals in the pre-season match in Clearwater.
The 401 Derby couldn’t have come sooner for many TFC fans. After last year’s 3-0 thrashing of Toronto FC in the first round of the playoffs, most fans have been waiting for revenge against our bitter rivals.
The DiMaggio Sports Complex in Clearwater, Florida will be the site where the 401 derby will pick up where it last left off. A meaningless match, in many ways, yet important at the same time. While yes, this game means nothing, it is important because not only does it give the fans a chance to see a new and improved Toronto FC side in action, but fans will also hope to get one over IMFC.
Stars Sebastian Giovinco and Jozy Altidore have both been ruled out for today’s game. Altidore left practice with a pulled hamstring and Giovinco is just resting after he supposedly got roughed around against Orlando City SC on Sunday.
This means Herculez Gomez, and youngsters Mo Babouli, Jordan Hamilton, and Tsubasa Endoh will likely receive the call. While head coach Greg Vanney has mostly used a 4-3-3 formation throughout this preseason so far, the second half of the scrimmage versus Orlando City SC saw the team switch to a 4-4-2 formation, and the team has been training with that formation over the past couple of days.
More from Toronto Reds
If the 4-4-2 is chosen, the team sheet may look like this (from left to right) Irwin; Morrow, Moor, Perquis, Beitashour; Osorio, Johnson, Bradley, Endoh; Babouli, Gomez.
This formation is not faveourable to the current players available to Vanney, but it might be good for the club to prepair to use multiple formations if needed. If the team decides to line up with a 4-3-3 formation, the team sheet may look like this;
This formation makes more sense for TFC and it is one that they have used quite often this pre-season. It allows Bradley to move up and attack, it pushes Endoh wide, and it gives both Cheyrou and Johnson the ability to defend when Bradley makes those deep runs. It will especially give players such as Endoh and Babouli the chance to shine.
The match kicks off at 4:00 EST, and will be streamed on YouTube.
