The 2024 season has come to an end for Toronto FC, marked by several ups and downs throughout the campaign. Under the management of John Herdman, the team experienced high points and promising stretches of form.
Unfortunately, these moments did not translate into titles, as the club was eliminated from the MLS before reaching the playoffs, a harsh failure for Herdman’s side. Despite having star players like Federico Bernardeschi and Lorenzo Insigne, the team struggled to deliver results, signaling the need for a rebuild and a new identity to restore Toronto FC to its former status as one of the top clubs in MLS.

A Significant Improvement Compared to Last Year
In 2024, Toronto FC showed a more focused approach and a better playing style than in 2023. This season, the team played 43 matches across the MLS, Canadian Championship, and Leagues Cup, compared to just 37 matches in 2023. This year, Toronto FC managed to secure 17 wins, 4 draws, and 22 losses in those 43 matches, reflecting a somewhat inconsistent performance. However, compared to 2023, when the club only recorded 4 wins, 10 draws, and 23 losses in 37 matches, there is a noticeable improvement.
Despite this progress, the team still fell short of expectations, especially given the caliber of the international players on the roster. While many of these stars have not consistently showcased their quality on the pitch, Federico Bernardeschi stands out as a brilliant performer who has given his all for Toronto FC.
Additionally, in the 2024 Canadian Championship, the team reached the final but was ultimately defeated by Vancouver FC. In contrast, in 2023, Toronto FC was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the same competition. Furthermore, the team climbed four spots in the MLS standings compared to the previous year. In 2024, Toronto FC finished in 11th place in the Eastern Conference, whereas in 2023, they were in 15th place, the last spot in the conference and the worst team in MLS overall.
This shows that John Herdman’s work has been more positive this year, but it still fell short of the fans’ and the football community’s expectations. Now, the hope is to see a much more competitive Toronto FC in the future, making it clear that they aim to contest every competition they enter.
