The 34-match regular season in MLS has come to an end in 2024. We can now see the teams that have qualified for the playoffs and the match that will decide the eighth spot in each conference.

The Eastern Conference proved to be very competitive compared to the Western Conference. Toronto FC, despite competing at a high level with several teams, had the chance to qualify for the fight for that eighth position. However, they couldn’t capitalize on several matches, failing to close them out and either losing or drawing. It turned out to be a highly irregular season for Toronto FC.

11th Place for John Herdman’s Team

Toronto FC finished in 11th place after all the MLS matches were completed. Out of the 34 games played, they collected 37 points, with 11 wins, 4 draws, and 19 losses.

This is a concerning statistic as they were the second team with the most losses in the Eastern Conference, only behind New England, who lost 21 matches this season. This negative stat highlights the need for a thorough review and a positive reconstruction for Toronto FC to avoid such painful defeats.

Additionally, Atlanta United finished in 9th place and will compete against CF Montreal for the 8th spot in the playoffs. Notably, Atlanta United accumulated 40 points, just 3 more than Toronto FC. TFC was very close to qualifying for this match but ultimately fell short due to the last-minute losses mentioned earlier.

Now, Toronto FC will have a long offseason to rest and reflect on what type of reconstruction is needed to compete at the highest level in MLS in 2025. MLSE has already indicated that significant changes are coming for the team, with a particular focus on building a sustainable playing identity for the future.
