Toronto FC is making the most of its preseason camp in Marbella, Spain, with Robin Fraser leading rigorous training sessions.
The squad, which includes key players like Federico Bernardeschi, Lorenzo Insigne, Jonathan Osorio, Sean Johnson, and Richie Laryea, is working on building a competitive identity ahead of the 2025 MLS season.

Focused Preseason with Star Players
Recent images from training sessions showcase the team’s commitment to improving both their fitness and tactical approach under Fraser’s direction.
This preparation is expected to translate into their upcoming friendly matches, where Toronto FC aims to test their readiness against European and North American opponents. The preseason is critical not just for performance on the pitch but also for strengthening the squad through strategic signings.
Toronto FC is looking to be a decisive team and for this reason, its interest in an Eredivisie striker increases more and more, but it will have to compete for him against Werder Bremen.
A Missed Opportunity for Toronto FC
Toronto FC was reportedly interested in reuniting with Eriq Zavaleta, a player who had a significant impact during his time with the club. Zavaleta, a Salvadoran international, played seven seasons with Toronto FC between 2015 and 2021, featuring in 152 matches. During that period, he was part of the squad’s golden era, contributing to their MLS Cup victory and other domestic successes.
The reunion seemed plausible given Zavaleta’s connection with former Toronto FC coach Greg Vanney, now managing LA Galaxy. However, Toronto’s hopes of bringing the defender back were dashed as Zavaleta signed a contract extension with LA Galaxy, keeping him with the club until 2025.
Zavaleta’s Current Role with LA Galaxy
Since joining LA Galaxy in 2022, Zavaleta’s role has been limited. In the 2023 season, he featured in only seven matches, scoring once in 200 minutes of play. Despite his limited impact, the Galaxy have shown faith in the veteran defender by securing his services for two more years.
The decision means Zavaleta will not return to Toronto FC, where he once thrived as a key defensive figure. Instead, the 30-year-old will aim to prove his worth with LA Galaxy, hoping to make a more significant impact in the upcoming MLS seasons.
While Toronto FC continues its preseason preparations in Marbella, the club will have to explore other defensive reinforcements in the transfer market as they gear up for the 2025 MLS season.
