Toronto FC (2-3) New York City FC | Painful Defeat Ends TFC's Positive Streak
By Oscar Cortes
Ahead of the match, everything seemed to indicate that the home team would be favorites, but in a stroke of misfortune, the visitors snatched all three points, ending TFC's quite positive streak.
With goals from Santiago, Andres Perea, and Malachi Jones, New York City secured a 3-2 victory over Toronto FC, with Federico Bernardeschi and Raoul Petettra scoring consolation goals for the hosts.
A challenging game for TFC's development
The first half saw all the goals of the match. The opening goal came from a penalty awarded in the 23rd minute, with VAR intervening to review Lognstaff's handball inside the box. Santiago Rodriguez successfully converted the penalty. The second goal came right at the end of the first half, as Malachi Jones found the net in the 44th minute to make it 2-0.
For the hosts, it seemed to be a game under control in terms of possession, but their ball control and shots on target weren't efficient enough in this first half.
At the start of the second half, John Herdman's team came out with the aim of staging a comeback, leading to a goal from Federico Bernardeschi, who capitalized on a rebound from Longstaff's shot to pull one back.
However, hopes of a comeback began to fade for TFC in the 77th minute, as the visitors scored their third goal through Andres Perea, making it 1-3. Minutes later, with the entry of Raoul Petettra, it would be the key to getting closer to the draw, as the Italian managed to score the second goal for the hosts in the 89th minute, ending the match with a score of 2-3.
The defeat pushes TFC away from the top of the MLS
This defeat for TFC is a painful blow after the streak they had been enjoying in the MLS. With 3 consecutive wins, Herdman's side aimed to continue this active streak, accumulating points to get closer to the top. However, after the defeat against New York City FC, The Reds find themselves in 4th place in the Eastern Conference, with 19 points from 12 matches played.
Their next opponent will be Nashville, as they travel to Tennessee for a match in the MLS on May 15th. It will be important for them to secure a victory to avoid dropping points in this competitive phase of the MLS, where defeats are not forgiven.
