The end of the season has arrived for Toronto FC, and the team finds itself in a very difficult position. Unfortunately, TFC has been stuck in a negative run of form, with three losses, one win, and one draw in their last five matches.

John Herdman has struggled to find solutions to the team’s issues throughout the season. Now, in their final match, they will face the best team in MLS and one of the greatest players in the history of the sport, Lionel Messi. This match will be held at BMO Field, and fans expect an exciting spectacle for Toronto FC’s last game of the regular season, against Inter Miami.

A Negative Stretch for John Herdman's Squad

Toronto FC's recent history against Inter Miami has not been favorable. The Reds have lost four of their last five matches against Inter Miami, with their only win coming in March 2023 with a 2-0 scoreline. Now, Inter Miami is the top team in MLS and leads the Eastern Conference, while Toronto FC is on the brink of playoff elimination.

The situation is especially challenging since TFC has played one more match than several teams chasing the final playoff spots. Teams like Philadelphia Union, DC United, and Atlanta United all have a game in hand and are still fighting to secure their playoff positions.

Toronto FC will play their last match on October 5, but other teams in the playoff race will not play their final match until around October 19. This creates an extended period of uncertainty regarding TFC's playoff chances.

The odds are very low for John Herdman’s side to sneak into the playoffs in this 2024 season, and the focus may now shift to rebuilding for the future. With an average starting age of 28.4 years, Toronto FC may need to reduce the squad's age and develop a new long-term project.
