• Uncertainty about what lies ahead for the Italian's career

Following Lorenzo Insigne’s recent statements, it appears the team may be carefully considering his departure for the upcoming season.
Since his arrival at Toronto FC in 2022, Insigne’s seasons have been rather inconsistent, and this year, he finished 2024 on a somewhat better note compared to previous years, yet significant questions remain about the Italian’s future. Insigne received quite a bit of criticism at the end of the 2024 season, primarily about his physical fitness and his overall performance, which has notably diminished at age 33, partly due to the natural aging process.

Insigne has publicly expressed affection for Napoli
"“I feel good in Toronto but Naples is my home. I always spend my holidays here. You can’t live without Naples. If Conte called me I’d go back to Napoli. You can’t say no.”"
- Lorenzo Insigne
Insigne has publicly expressed affection for Napoli. In an interview with Napoli radio, he made some rather controversial remarks that have now spread within the Toronto FC community. Insigne expressed appreciation for the welcome and support he's received in Toronto from the fans and the league, along with the memorable moments over his past three seasons.
However, it is also clear that more is expected from the Italian star, who, despite being cherished by the fans, has struggled to display the form he previously showed in Italy. With ongoing fitness and injury issues, it seems unlikely that fans will see the best version of Insigne again.
Though his contract with Toronto FC runs until June 2026, Insigne may only play one more season for the team. Given his age, a move to a European club could be challenging as it does not align with the current market’s preference. However, if Napoli were to call, Insigne would likely be thrilled to return to the club he holds dear. These comments have sparked speculation within the Toronto FC community, especially following the team’s elimination from the 2024 MLS season.
