Toronto FC has always stood out for bringing in high-quality foreign players who shine in MLS. For the 2024 season, this is no exception. The club has received two nominations for Signing of the Year with these two players.
Both had a very successful career in the Premier League before joining Toronto FC. This is a point of pride for the team, which has excelled both on the field and in recruitment. These two players were important additions to help TFC compete during the 2024 MLS season, although unfortunately, the team didn’t make it to the Eastern Conference playoffs and was eliminated during the regular season.

Matty Longstaff and Kevin Long Nominated for Signing of the Year
These foreign players at Toronto FC have earned a strong reputation, having previously played in the Premier League. Matty Longstaff, a 24-year-old, had a significant development at Newcastle United. He grew through their youth system and played some key minutes in the Premier League, but eventually found himself not breaking fully into the first team. Longstaff then moved to the lower leagues in England before landing at Toronto FC for the 2024 season.
In MLS, he played 32 matches, missing only two regular-season games. Across those 32 matches, he racked up over 2,200 minutes, proving to be a vital player for John Herdman. He scored two goals and provided two assists, making him an essential signing for Toronto FC, showing a high level of performance throughout the season.
On the other hand, there’s Kevin Long, another player with an important Premier League background. The 34-year-old Irish defender brings fantastic experience and leadership to the team. Before arriving from Birmingham City, which plays in England's second division, Long had a remarkable stint with Burnley in the Premier League.
As a central defender, he contributed his wealth of experience to Toronto FC. He played 26 matches and accumulated 2,116 minutes, which is a lot for a player of his age. The hope is that he continues to contribute to Toronto FC in the best way possible next season. Now, we await the results of the voting for Signing of the Year, hoping for positive outcomes for Matty Longstaff and Kevin Long.
