The MLSPA released the fall 2024 salary guide for all teams, revealing that Toronto FC has some of the highest salaries for several players. Unfortunately, these players' performance on the field does not reflect the hefty amounts they are paid.

This creates a challenging situation for Toronto FC, and significant measures will be taken to rebuild the squad in order to compete effectively in the 2025 season. Despite the high salaries, the team's performance hasn’t lived up to expectations in the competitions they participate in year after year.

The Top-Earning Players at Toronto FC

This shows how, unfortunately, Toronto FC has two global football superstars, but these players, now past the age of 30, find it difficult to perform at 100% for an entire season. Lorenzo Insigne and Federico Bernardeschi are prime examples, and it is evident that age and time catch up with players.

Federico Bernardeschi, while being the most important player in Toronto FC in terms of generating and creating play on the field, hasn't been able to contribute as much in terms of scoring, as expected. Similarly, Lorenzo Insigne has struggled with injuries, which have hindered his performance this 2024 season, even though it was better than 2023.

It will be crucial to see how these high salaries are handled for next season. Insigne and Bernardeschi are the two highest-paid players at Toronto FC, followed by Richie Laryea, Jonathan Osorio, and Prince Owusu. This top five represents some of the highest salaries in the club, yet the results on the field don’t align with their earnings.

As discussed in the end-of-year press conference, Jonathan Osorio mentioned that the team needs to build a project that will allow them to compete effectively for the MLS title. Coach John Herdman also emphasized that the rebuild would involve both player departures and arrivals, which will be key to competing at the highest level in MLS, the Canadian Championship, and the Leagues Cup. It will be critical to monitor how this salary structure evolves going into the 2025 season.
