Toronto FC Bolsters Midfield with $4.3M Signing of German Midfielder Niklas Dorsch

According to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano (@FabrizioRomano), Toronto FC has secured a major mid-season reinforcement by agreeing to sign German defensive midfielder Niklas Dorsch from Bundesliga side 1. FC Heidenheim. TFC will pay a transfer fee of $4.3 million, with Dorsch putting pen to paper on a five-year contract keeping him in Major League Soccer through 2031. Who is Niklas Dorsch?

Niklas Dorsch, 28, brings a wealth of European top-flight experience to Ontario. Developed in the famed youth academy of Bayern Munich, Dorsch made his senior professional debut for Bayern in April 2018, marking the occasion with a debut goal in the Bundesliga.

Seeking regular playing time, he transitioned to 1. FC Heidenheim in 2018 where he emerged as one of the most reliable deep-lying playmakers in Germany. His strong performances earned him a transfer to Belgian side KAA Gent in 2020, gaining experience in UEFA Europa League competitions. In 2021, Dorsch played a starring role for the Germany U-21 national team, starting every match as Germany won the 2021 UEFA European Under-21 Championship.

Following his international success, Dorsch returned to Germany’s top flight with FC Augsburg in 2021 before returning to 1. FC Heidenheim in August 2024.

Dorsch is coming off a highly productive campaign in the German top tier. During the 2025–26 Bundesliga season with Heidenheim, he logged 2,258 minutes across 32 league matches (27 starts), establishing himself as a vital cog in their engine room. Positionally, Dorsch is a quintessential holding defensive midfielder (No. 6). Known for his tactical discipline, low center of gravity, and composure under pressure, he excels at reading opposition passes and executing clean, short-to-medium range distribution. He pairs defensive grit with neat footwork, allowing him to navigate press-heavy environments.

Regarding his physical condition, Dorsch's career has occasionally been interrupted by physical setbacks. According to injury tracking on Transfermarkt, Dorsch suffered a severe leg fracture in July 2022 while at Augsburg, which sidelined him for six months. Subsequent minor foot, groin, and muscle issues caused brief absences during the 2023–24 and 2024–25 seasons. However, his ability to stay healthy and log over 2,200 Bundesliga minutes last season indicates he has fully put those durability concerns behind him.

Most importantly, TFC needs a midfielder who can shuttle the ball smoothly from the defensive third up into the attacking zone to feed playmakers.
