Throughout the 2024 season, Toronto FC's defensive struggles have been evident, with the central defense being particularly problematic. Unfortunately, the current players have not been up to the team's standards, leading to a defensive line that concedes too many goals and lacks the authority to be effective in matches.

Reviewing the list of available free agents, one notable player stands out—24-year-old Matthew Nocita, whose last club was the New York Red Bulls. He has been without a team since January of this year and has a market value of just €150,000.
Signing Nocita could be a positive move for Toronto FC, as the team desperately needs to strengthen its central defense. Unfortunately, players like Kevin Long and Nicksoen Gomis have not consistently performed at the required level.

John Herdman’s squad continues to suffer due to these defensive shortcomings. While TFC did bring in Henry Wingo, a defender with the potential to positively impact the team’s mentality and flank play, he is not a central defender—the position where Toronto FC is most vulnerable.
It might also be worth considering promoting a player from the TFC2 youth ranks, as these young players could be developed for the future and compete at the highest level in the MLS. However, John Herdman must carefully evaluate the best course of action, as the final stretch of the season is approaching. Unfortunately, it is no secret that Toronto FC’s defense has often been disastrous, and Herdman must make some key decisions to address this critical weakness.
