Toronto FC's head coach, John Herdman, has hailed Federico Bernardeschi's contributions both on and off the pitch, despite the star player's absence from the scoresheet so far this season.

In a press conference last Friday, Herdman emphasized Bernardeschi's newfound leadership role within the team, noting that he has elevated his game and positively influenced his teammates. "He’s taken on a genuine leadership responsibility in the team, and it’s helped elevate all elements of his performance," Herdman remarked.

Observing Bernardeschi's behavior in the dressing room, Herdman highlighted the player's increased involvement in day-to-day team matters compared to previous seasons. "He’s on top of different personalities in the group. In training, he sets the standards. Every single day he’s turning up and you can just see he’s putting a shift in," Herdman added.

Despite not yet finding the back of the net, Bernardeschi has been an integral part of Toronto FC's strong start to the season. Leading the team in attempted shots, shots on target, and expected goals (xG), Bernardeschi's impact goes beyond scoring goals. Herdman expressed confidence that the goals will come, noting a significant shift in Bernardeschi's attitude and mentality.

Herdman also commended Bernardeschi for his commitment to mentoring younger players, citing an instance where the star player coached Kobe Franklin on his crossing technique after training. "He’s really invested and really dialed into something bigger than him," Herdman concluded, underscoring Bernardeschi's selflessness and dedication to the team's success.

After a disastrous first season and an offseason filled with rumors linking him to several Italian clubs, and even suggesting that he himself was offering himself to certain clubs to leave Toronto, it seems that Federico Bernardeschi has found his place in the team and in MLS.
