The 2022 MLS Expansion Draft is set to take place on Friday, meaning clubs had to reveal which players they are making available. For Toronto FC specifically, seven players have been made available for potential selection.
The TFC players who have been made available include goalkeepers Alex Bono, Quentin Westberg and Greg Ranjitsingh. Additionally, there are defenders Auro Jr., Kadin Chung and Doneil Henry, along with forward Ifunanyachi Achara.
The players made available allude to the 2022 Expansion Draft being of little concern to the Reds. For example, Bono, Westberg and Henry will all see their contracts expire at the end of this year.
In addition, Toronto FC declined Achara's contract option for next year, while Auro Jr. is on loan with Sanos FC. Auro Jr. went to the Brazilian club in February for the reminder of 2022, with an option to make it a permanent move.
Seven Toronto FC players have been made available for the 2022 MLS Expansion Draft on Friday, but in reality it will be of little -- if any -- consequence to the Reds.
As a result, this leaves just Ranjitsingh and Chung currently set to return to Toronto for the 2023 MLS season. That the former is even available for selection, tell you everything you need to know about TFC's direction in starting from scratch with the goalkeeping position.
As for Chung, he joined the Reds from Pacific FC earlier this year, after a successful trial. He made eight appearances in the regular season -- including five starts -- and added one assist.
You can make an argument for Bono being a potentially interesting pick, given his resume from his time in Southern Ontario. However, as per Tom Bogert of mlssoccer.com, the case is being made for Minnesota United FC's Tyler Miller as the goalkeeper for St. Louis to consider.
Former TFC All-Star in the pool
One available player who may interest Reds supporters is their former Designated Player, Alejandro Pozuelo. The midfielder is currently out of contract, but in the process of attempting to negotiate a new deal with Inter Miami CF.
In reality, the likelihood of any Toronto FC player being selected is extremely small, with only St. Louis picking this year. There are 263 players available from 23 clubs and only one player can be taken from any club.
St. Louis can select up to five players on Friday. Austin FC, Atlanta United, D.C. United, LAFC and New York City FC are all exempt after losing players in the 2021 Expansion Draft.
Will you have any concern if -- however unlikely -- either Chung and Ranjitsingh are selected by St. Louis? Where do you predict MLS will expand to next? Let us know in the comments section below.
