John Herdman’s Motivation for the Squad
Herdman anticipates a fiercely contested match, particularly in midfield, and acknowledges that quick transitions could pose difficulties for Toronto FC. He highlighted the performance of Sean Johnson, particularly his efforts in the penalty shootout against New York Red Bulls, and emphasized the importance of keeping a clean sheet. Herdman also recognized the strength of their opponents.
"If you’re pushing for a championship, goalkeepers will win your championships, defences will win your championships, keeping clean sheets are as important as what happens at the other end of the pitch."
- John Herdman
He acknowledged that CF Pachuca, as a CONCACAF champion, is a strong team and that their recent success makes them a formidable opponent. Herdman understands that all teams, especially champions, come motivated and with a strong desire to win. However, Toronto FC is determined to rise to the challenge and prove their worth.
"We know they’re a top team, we’ve seen what they did to Columbus [in the CONCACAF Champions Cup final] – there ain’t many teams that do that."
- John Herdman
Additionally, CF Pachuca’s coach also commented on the highly competitive nature of the match, noting that Toronto FC has key players capable of competing at the highest level in this competition and the MLS. With both teams already advancing to the next phase, the focus now is on determining the group leader and preparing for the Round of 16, which will be a significant test for both teams.
"It is going to be difficult [and] very competitive. First is to go on to the next phase and then to try to do best. Pachuca is always dedicated to winning and to winning trophies for our club."
- Guillermo Almada
