In a thrilling encounter at the Yankee Stadium, New York City FC managed to clinch a hard-fought victory against Toronto FC with a scoreline of 2-1 in the fourth matchday of the MLS 2024 season.

The game kicked off with both teams showing intent, but it was NYCFC who asserted early dominance. However, it was Toronto FC who drew first blood, with Marshall-Rutty finding the back of the net in the 7th minute, courtesy of a brilliant assist from Kevin Long. This early setback spurred NYCFC into action, and they quickly responded with Santiago Rodriguez equalizing in the 24th minute.

First Half

The first half witnessed intense action, with NYCFC dictating the tempo of the game. Toronto FC's Kevin Long found himself booked with a yellow card in the 22nd minute, further adding to their woes. Despite Toronto's efforts to regain control, NYCFC's relentless pressure paid off.

As the first half drew to a close, tensions escalated on the field, with players engaging in heated exchanges. The referee added three minutes of stoppage time, but neither side could alter the scoreline before the halftime whistle blew.

Second half

The game took a dramatic turn in the 68th minute when Keaton Parks of NYCFC received a red card for a reckless challenge on Toronto FC's Kobe Franklin. Despite being a man down, NYCFC continued to dominate proceedings, pressing high and creating numerous scoring opportunities.

Toronto FC fought valiantly, with Akinola coming close to equalizing in the 81st minute, but his effort resulted in an injury to NYCFC's goalkeeper, Matt Freese. As tensions rose, the fans' frustration became evident, particularly towards Marshall-Rutty, who was involved in a controversial incident that went unpunished by the referee.
