We are just a few days away from the start of the 2024 Leagues Cup, and Toronto FC is approaching it with a completely different attitude compared to last season. This year, fans are expecting to see a hungrier and more competitive Toronto FC.
While the team will face a tough group in this year's Leagues Cup, let's first take a look back at how the team performed last season, as well as the overall development of the Leagues Cup, including the results of various MLS teams in Group 3 of the East.
A Tough 2023 for Toronto FC
Toronto FC was in Group 3 of the East, which included Atlas from Mexico and New York City FC, alongside Toronto FC. Only the top two teams from each group of three advanced. Unfortunately for Toronto FC, they did not qualify.
The matches were quite challenging, as Toronto FC was not in the best form last season. In fact, they were among the worst teams in the Eastern Conference of the MLS.
In the 2023 Leagues Cup, Toronto FC did not manage to earn any points in the two group stage matches. They lost both games, conceding six goals and failing to score any. Consequently, they did not advance to the round of 16, reflecting the difficult and complex season they had.

The 2023 Leagues Cup Champion
The team that proved to be the most adept at reaching the final of the tournament was Inter Miami. They overcame several MLS teams and, despite not facing any Liga MX teams, the arrival of top global football figures such as Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets, and Lionel Messi helped them conquer the Leagues Cup. The final was a highly competitive match against Nashville.
The match went to a penalty shootout, where Inter Miami won 10-9 after a 1-1 draw. This achievement serves as a significant motivation for Toronto FC this season. Similar to Inter Miami, Toronto FC has two crucial European stars in their current squad under John Herdman.
Lorenzo Insigne and Federico Bernardeschi are expected to give their best in the group stage and in their two matches against New York Red Bull and Pachuca from Mexico. Fans are eager to see a hungry Toronto FC aiming to conquer this tournament.
