Coach of Toronto FC, John Herdman: "The club is working hard and speaking to a few players"

As Toronto FC gears up for the imminent MLS regular season kickoff, the spotlight intensifies on the team's roster dynamics. Despite the impending deadline, the squad's composition remains a work in progress, raising questions about its readiness for the challenges ahead.

As we reflect on the off-season, Toronto FC's acquisitions have been modest, with only Honduran midfielder Deybi Flores and top draft pick Tyrese Spicer added to the roster. This limited influx contrasts sharply with the team's disappointing performance last year, where they languished at the bottom of the MLS standings, setting franchise records for the fewest wins and points in a single season.

With the start of the 2024 campaign looming, Toronto FC's roster stands at 26 players under contractual obligation. However, with the MLS roster limit set at 30 players, there is room for further additions. Notably, the league stipulates that teams can allocate 18-20 slots for senior team players, while the remaining 10 can be assigned to the supplemental roster.

Coach John Herdman shed some light on the situation, acknowledging the presence of new players in the pre-season camp while maintaining confidentiality regarding their identities. Herdman emphasized the importance of allowing these trialists to focus on their performances without distraction. He hinted at their potential to bolster specific areas of the team, hinting at a strategic approach to strengthening the squad.
