Toronto FC needs to focus on rebuilding through more attack-minded midfielders. In the 2024 season, it was evident that the midfielders weren’t the most effective in driving the team’s offensive efforts.
They were careful in the defensive zone and controlled the game but lacked creativity in attack. Davey Flores, for example, is a highly focused defensive player, dedicated to breaking up play and distributing safe passes. Jonathan Osorio, a leader on the field, helped organize the team but didn’t contribute many goals, focusing more on transitioning the ball from defense to attack rather than scoring himself.

What Does Toronto FC Need for the 2025 Season?
Unfortunately, Toronto FC didn’t make the MLS playoffs, finishing in 11th place in the Eastern Conference. The 2024 season didn’t go as hoped, and John Herdman’s arrival didn’t lead to the expected turnaround. In many matches, the team seemed unfocused, often losing games in the final minutes and struggling with consistency in front of goal.
TFC finished 11th in the Eastern Conference, just three points away from ninth place, which would have given them a chance to compete for the eighth spot. Now, during this off-season, they are considering possible signings and establishing a game identity. The team needs to address weaknesses in both defense and midfield since that’s where play creation and transitions begin, breaking through opposing lines.
John Herdman will need to work on this in training and bring in more decisive players for the upcoming season. The forwards also need to become more effective in front of goal. Prince Owusu was TFC’s best forward, but other options like Deandre Kerr and Tyrese Spicer, while valuable in rotation, didn’t contribute as much in terms of goals.
Federico Bernardeschi was effective in playmaking, scoring, and assisting, while Lorenzo Insigne didn’t have the same impact. The reconstruction of the team will require a well-thought-out tactical plan for Toronto FC’s future.
