After finishing the 2024 season with several disappointments, Toronto FC is looking to rebuild and work toward a more competitive future. The club aims to return to the top of the standings in MLS.

In the 2024 season, John Herdman's squad failed to qualify for the MLS playoffs in the Eastern Conference, a significant issue for the team. This result has highlighted flaws in various departments of the club. As a result, both the administrative and sporting sides are planning to make changes that will positively impact the team as they prepare for the 2025 season.

New Changes Coming to Toronto FC

There has been much discussion regarding the future of several players, many of whom will see their contracts expire in December 2024. It is expected that many of these players will not renew, with only a few staying on at Toronto FC. The CEO of MLSE has stressed the importance of creating a new identity for the club.

"What kind of football we want to play… that should dictate every strategy that you follow — from your academy to your scouting department."

Keith Pelley

In recent years, Toronto FC seems to have lost its identity, leading to repeated failures. The MLSE CEO also mentioned the need for the club to compete consistently across all three competitions it regularly participates in: MLS, the Canadian Championship, and the League Cup. In 2024, TFC reached the final of the Canadian Championship but suffered a painful defeat, casting doubt on the future of head coach John Herdman.

"Somebody that contends, somebody that can win, somebody that can come back to the glory years on an annual basis. What that means is we're going to look at everything."

Keith Pelley

Herdman, the English manager, has struggled to lead the team effectively, with issues in managing games and the squad becoming more apparent as the losses mounted. Now, a rebuild is underway at Toronto FC, where the club hopes to bring in the best possible players and revamp its sporting department to achieve the goals set for the upcoming season.
